Why Do Human Beings Poison Themselves?

Napowrimo, day 26 and here’s the prompt! Have you ever heard someone wonder what future archaeologists, whether human or from alien civilization, will make of us? Today, I’d like to challenge you to answer that question in poetic form, exploring a particular object or place from the point of view of some far-off, future scientist? The object or site of study could be anything from a “World’s Best Grandpa” coffee mug to a Pizza Hut, from a Pokemon poster to a cellphone.

Why Do Human Beings Poison Themselves?

Human beings are funny creatures,

They really are quite strange!

They inhale deadly poisons.

For this,

Numbered papers they exchange,

And on the box,

Are grotesque images,

Harmful hardened shocks.

But still they smoke these poison sticks,

They just can’t get enough.

Then they drink,

Poisoned liquid,

Damaging themselves inside.

They also eat altering chemicals,

Which will increase their body’s size.

We watch on,

Observing in secret,

The lives of the human race.

But we cannot understand,

Why you treat yourself with disgrace.

You really do have potential,

You could unlock your mind,

You could achieve so much more,

If you gave yourself the time.

So we’ll keep watching,

Waiting patiently.

For the day your willing to change.

So when your finally ready,

The niceties we’ll exchange.
