Ketchup on Your Treatment

Napowrimo 2018, Day 30 and my final day. Its been quite a journey, sometimes challenging but I’m proud to have succeeded. The final (optional) prompt, I’d like you to take your cue from Borges, and write a poem that engages with a strange and fascinating fact. It could be an odd piece of history, an unusual bit of art trivia, or something just plain weird. While I cannot vouch for the actual accuracy of any of the facts presented at the links above (or any other facts you might use as inspiration!), I can tell you that there are definitely some poetic ideas here, just waiting for someone to use them. I’ve gone with the unusual fact that ketchup used to be used as a medicine. Disclaimer: There is no evidence that ketchup has any medical benefits.

Ketchup ketchup cures everything.

Put it on cuts and bruises,

Or even bee strings.

Ketchup ketchup is good for what ales you.

Treats a bad cough or cold,

Or even raging flue.

Ketchup ketchup is pharmaceutical dream.

Put it on strained ankle,

It’ll be cured to the extreme.

Ketchup ketchup a saucy treat.

Not to be used as medicine,

But on the food you eat.

Ha! Love this. The “ketchup ketchup” is kind of like an invocation, kind of like a nursery rhyme – amazing.
