A Mask of Despair

Napowrimo 2019, Day 21. Wasn’t feeling today’s prompt so just went where the flow took me.

Have you ever noticed,

That life seems perfection for others,

While for you it’s an uphill struggle.

A lot of it’s down to social media,

How our lives are public online.

We post pictures of smiling faces,

All the good times,

None of the bad.

We upload holiday pics,

Days out, achievements,

Yet most refuse to share times that are sad.

We compare ourselves,

While harshly judging our own lives and selves,

To simply not be good enough.

We see parents giving their kids the world,

Exciting adventures and amazing gifts,

Giving them magical memories to treasure.

While your efforts are sadly lacking.

Then there’s gorgeous selfies of slim toned bodies,

While you’re sat there feeling fat and ugly.

You share your feelings of despair,

Yet are judged as attention seeking,

A moaner, a misery,

Whose told this isn’t the place,

There’s others far worse off.

So shut up, keep stum,

Because no one wants to know.

So you join in posting happy pics,

While wearing a mask of smiles.

Yet still we see others lives of perfection,

Wondering how many are wearing masks?

Still feeling you’re actually the only one.

You’ll never be good enough,

For this world.

  1. So very true. All I ever see on FB are the perfect people, but for is it just a front.

  2. The unmasked people I hang out with are my favourite ones. They’ve inspired me to unmask more. It doesn’t help against my depression, which would be too much to ask for. But it does mean I have a place where I can find support in moments when real life friends are busy working or doing other real life stuff.

Thank you. Yes I have certain people in my life I can truly be myself with. I do find sharing sometimes cathartic but depression is complex and difficult to manage x

      1. Couldn’t agree more!

  3. So true … I’m on FB and I’m not perfect.
