I am Spider

Napowrimo 2019, Day 23. Today to write a poem about an animal. If you’d like to take a look at some other poems for inspiration, you might like James Dickey’s “The Dusk of Horses,” or Tennyson’s “The Eagle.”

I’m lurking in the corners,

Hiding in the cracks.

I don’t mean you any harm,

I will not attack.

Yet sometimes when you see me,

You let out a shriek.

Then chase me with a newspaper,

My getaway I seek.

But did you know I’m special,

I am quite unique.

My web is liquid,

Until it hits the air,

Then it is not weak.

It’s actually as strong as steel.

The only reason it breaks,

Is because it’s spun so thinly,

It’s like exquisite snowflakes.

Did you know I dance,

To attract my date.

I also bring her gifts,

Then hopefully we’ll mate.

Did you know I have royal blood,

The bluest of the blue.

I am one of 35,000 species.

I mean no harm to you.

I’m getting rid of bugs.

Please don’t judge me harshly,

Not all spiders are thugs.
